SCI COMPLICATIONS

Horizontales
Reduced circulation, frequency of direct trauma to legs, prolonged bedrest can cause
High prevalence in depression
Exaggerated response of the ANS, can be life threatening. Headache, excessive sweating, flushing, goosebumps, and change in heart rate. Can be caused nu full bladder, YTI, or wrinkle in clothes and lowers BP until things are fixed.
Body has difficulty regulating body temperature because the blood vessels do not constrict well enough to conserve body heat.
Above a C4 injury requires a respirator as C4 innervates the diaphragm. T7-T12 innervates abdomen, T1-T12 intercostals so breathing may be shallow and cough production may be difficult as well
Muscle spasms. Can worsen with infections, positioning, bed sores, UTI, etc. Can lead to contractures, pain and discomfort/difficulty with positioning
Blood pools in the LE as a result of reduced tone. Can cause light headedness, dizziness, change in color, sudden weakness and unresponsiveness when trying to sit up. Patients will wear abdominal binders and anti embolism hose to help with circulation.
Shock to the spinal column causing inability to control bladder and possibly the need for a ventilator due to lost connection to the diaphragm, intercostals and abdominal muscles
UTI or bladder infections,
Bowel can be flaccid or spastic.
Verticales
Abnormal formation of bone deposits.
Decubitus Ulcers. Very common in SCI from bed rest, or seated all day. Low circulation and sensation.
