Degeneration of the dopamine producing neurons of the SN
Release dopamine where it is stored in the neurons, prevents dopamine reuptake and can block cholinergic and glutamate receptors.
Administer as monotherapy in early stages on PD & used in conjunction with levodopa/carbidopa in late stage in PD to allow for a lower dosage of levodopa/carbidopa.  Administered in younger client who are better able to tolerate daytime drowsiness and postural hypotension.

Most common/effective medication; monitor for orthostatic and dyskinesias
Enhance the effects of Levodopa by blocking its breakdown; side effect is yellow-orange urine
Block the muscarinic receptors, whish assist in maintaining balance between dopamine and acetylcholine receptors in the brain.Treats tremors and muscle rigidity (s/s caused by excessive cholinergic activity)
