Chapter 14 A The Principles Of Hair Design

Horizontales
Rhythm is the regular pulsation or recurrent pattern of movement within a design. Rhythm can be fast, medium or slow moving.
Single lines move from one place to another without stopping. Single lines are not broken with layers, so a one length hair cut at 0 degrees is an example of single lines.
Horizontal lines create width in any design. Horizontal lines are parallel to the floor and the horizon. Makes narrow things look wider.
Transitional lines are usually lightly curved to soften the abrupt demarcation lines in a style that goes from very curly to very straight.
Perpendicular lines intersect to form a 90 degree angle. Perpendicular lines are when a vertical and horizontal line cross each other.
Repeating lines in a hairstyle. Parallel lines move next to each other without touching. The opposite of perpendicular.
Symmetrical balance occurs when an imaginary line is drawn through the center of the face and the 2 resulting halves are a mirror image of the other.
Balance is establishing equal or appropriate proportions to create symmetry.
Vertical lines are opposite of horizontal lines. Vertical lines create length and narrowness to any design. Vertical lines follow the eye up and down. Vertical lines are perpendicular to horizontal lines. Vertical lines make wide things look narrow.
Verticales
Diagonal lines are positioned between horizontal and vertical lines. Diagonal lines emphasize or minimize facial features depending upon how they are used.
The comparative relationship of one thing to another. To better balance proportion of the body, visualize 8 heads from the head to the feet.
Also known as focus in a design is what draws the eye first, before it travels to the rest of the design.
Contrasting Lines are the same as perpendicular, when a horizontal and vertical line cross each other to form a 90 degree angle.
Curved lines move in a circular or semi circular motion (clock wise or counter clockwise). Curved lines can be used horizontally, diagonally or vertically. Curved lines repeating in opposite directions create a wave.
Asymmetrical balance is established when the two imaginary halves of a hairstyle have equal visual weight but are positioned unevenly.
Form is the mass or general outline of a hairstyle. FORM HAS 3 DIMENSIONS: LENGTH, WIDTH & DEPTH. Positive space.
Design texture refers to the wave patterns or illusion of motion or movement in the hair. Curly, Wavy or straight.
Harmony is the creation of unity in a design and is the most important of the art principle.
Space is the area OUTSIDE of the outline of the hairstyle. Negative space.
Directional lines are a lines with a definite forward or backward movement like an a line bob: dramatic diagonal forward line.
Line defines form and space. Lines create the shape, design and movement of a hairstyle.
