Relations and Functions

Horizontales
take a ruler or other straight edge and draw a line parallel to the y-axis for any chosen value of x. If the vertical line you drew intersects the graph more than once for any value of x then the graph is not the graph of a function.
the difference between the highest and the lowest values in a set. The set of all second coordinates (or y-values) of a relation or function.
a matching process where the points of one set are matched against the points of another set. Illustrates how each element of the domain is paired with an element in the range
A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range. This is typically generated by some equation or rule.
the f(y) in a equation. The answer that is received as a result of putting y into the function.
The horizontal axis on a coordinate plane. Points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.
A set of numbers or coordinates. They are used to locate any point on a coordinate plane, written in the form (x, y).
A set of ordered pairs. An x value and y value.
the set of outputs the function achieves when it is applied to its whole set of outputs. In other words the y in a x and y ordered pair
A plane divided into four regions by horizontal and vertical number lines. They are used for graphing.
Verticales
Graphs that appear as one smooth curve, with no holes or gaps. These graphs can be drawn without lifting a pencil.
a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =). the process of equating one thing with another.
The point at which the x- and y-axis intersect on the coordinate plane. It is used to determine the coordinates for every other point on the graph.
A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range. This is typically generated by some equation or rule.
a pictorial representation or a diagram that represents data or values in an organized manner. structure amounting to a set of objects in which some pairs of the objects are in some sense "related".
Four regions into which the x- and y-axes separate the coordinate plane.Located by using the Roman numerals I, II, III, and IV beginning with the top right
The vertical axis on a coordinate plane. Points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates.
Graphically, the point(s) at which a graph intersects the x-axis. Algebraically, the value(s) for which f(x) = 0.
the f(x) in a equation. The answer that is received as a result of putting x into the function.
the set of all possible x-values which will make the function "work". will output real y-values.
