This discontinuity is a result of base metal contaminants or atmospheric conditions affecting the weld metal.
When weld metal rolls over the toe and does not fuse with base metal or adjacent weld metal.

This discontinuity can be the result of improper electrode angle while welding.
A groove left behind in the base metal that usually runs tangent to the weld metal.
