Neurotic and Mature Defense Mechanisms

Horizontales
This is the basis of all of the other defense mechanisms. Example: A person has very strong negative feelings for a coworker. Instead of acting on those feelings, the patient resists the urge to express them.

The shifting of an emotion from an object or person to one that is less threatening. Example: A patient is angry about the lack of bedside manner of their doctor and yells at the nurse about their lack of compassion.
Verticales
Making a conscious effort to forget about uncomfortable feelings. Example: A patients who lost a spouse to brain cancer puts their energy into fundraising for brain cancer research.
The transformation of an unacceptable impulse into an opposite reaction. Example: a client responds to a rude person by treating them with consideration and respect.
Using an altered state of consciousness to avoid mental distress. Example: a patient develops amnesia and leaves is found wandering aimlessly 15 miles from home (fugue state) after receiving news about the terminal illness of their spouse.
Upon having their children removed from the home by protective services for physical abuse, the patient tells the therapist about all of the negative personality traits that the children inherited from their father that led to the use of physical discipline.
A young woman who has a low self esteem spends her time mentoring adolescent girls about self-love and self-care.
