Waves

Teacher: Mrs. Donovan
Horizontales
The bending of a wave as it passes an edge or an opening.
Bending of a wave as it passes from one medium to another.
Wave in which matter moves parallel (same direction) to the direction of the wave. Also known as a compressional wave.
Waves that do not require matter to travel. There are 7 kinds of these waves: radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, UV light, x-rays, gamma rays.
The dense region of a compressional or longitudinal wave.
Waves that can only travel through matter such as longitudinal and transverse waves.
Waves in which particles move perpendicular to the direction of the wave; the wave has an S-shape in it.
The low points of a transverse wave.
Verticales
The high points on a transverse wave
The measure of the size of the wave.
The apparent change in the frequency of a wave caused by relative motion between the source of the wave and the observer.
The less dense region of a longitudinal wave.
Locations where the interfering waves always cancel.
Matter through which a wave travels; liquid, solid, or gas.
The number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point in a given amount of time. It is measured in Hertz.
A repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space.
The process of two or more waves overlapping and combining to form a new wave.
The distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it. Example: In a transverse wave- it is the distance from crest to crest.
