Type of open Wx caused by a scraping of the outer skin layers
Jarring of the brain; observe for loss of consciousness (LOC)
Edema caused by bleeding under the skin; ice area immediately
Call "XXX Control" for advice; induce vomiting ONLY if advised giving Ipecac (2 wds)
Most severe heat injury - the victim's core temp is 105+ F; red hot skin, unable to sweat anymore (2 wds)
Core temp 95 F - move pt inside, remove wet clothing, wrap in a blanket. give warm liquids (no alcohol, caffeine), & monitor Resp
Pt is unable to speak, cough or breathe (3 wds)
For a victim: evaluate ABCs, perform CPR prn, control bleeding, triage other injuries; treat life-threatening injuries 1st (2 wds)
Wash Wx with soap & H2O, apply ice to stop swelling, keep "bite site" below heart level
White, waxy, or grayish-yellow skin with ice crystals in the epidermis; give warm blankets, do not rub or break blisters; place sterile gauze between thawed body parts
A clean straight cut done on purpose or accidental
Uncontrolled heavy bleeding
Verticales
Keep pt calm, avoid exertion, immobilize limb with bite, placing it below heart level
Move pt to fresh air, call EMS, loosen tight clothing, wrap in warm blanket & start CPR prn (2 wds)
Closed wound; apply ice packs to reduce swelling; discoloration is normal
Wash with soap & H2O, drench with alcohol & rinse; add compresses of calamine lotion, colloidal oatmeal baths or topical corticosteroids (2 wds)
Unique to this injury/condition: clear or bloody drainage from ears or nose, seizures, watch for respiratory arrest; Call EMS STAT (3 wds)
Deep hole made by a piercing object (knife, nail, bullet, animal tooth); tetanus may be an issue
A jagged cut
Elevate extremity; cover with sterile dressing & control bleeding; wrap severed tissue in sterile gauze, baggy; put in cooler & send with pt for re-attachment
Partial tear of a ligament, joint, or cartilage caused by a twisting injury; RICE
Muscle or tendon injury caused by over-exertion; RICE at first but also use heat & muscle relaxants
