External conflict occurs between a character and an outside force. Internal conflict is a struggle within the mind of a character. Both types of conflict can plan an important role in the same event. For example, as a knight enters into battle with an enemy, he may struggle internally with doubts about his courage. Often an internal conflict results when a character faces a moral dilemma-a problem in which the character must decide what is morally right. In medieval romances, many characters face moral dilemmas related to their efforts to live up the code of chivalry.
