Literary Elements

Horizontales
The character against the protagonist. The “villain”
Something that represents another thing (usually a concept or idea).
Person vs some force that is NOT himself (any other character or force...like nature, or fate etc)
Clues/hints the author gives to indicate what MAY happen in the future.
An educated guess based on your prior knowledge and the text evidence in the story.
These characters seem well rounded and well developed to the reader. We know several different things about this character. They have layers of personality, interests, etc.
This term refers to the words the writer chooses to use.
When and where the story takes place. This can significantly affect how characters behave and what they can do.
The sequence of events in a story. (What happens in what order)
Verticales
This character never undergoes any significant INTERNAL change. They believe and behave the same way in the beginning as they do at the end of the story.
When the plot transitions back to previous events
The main character. Sometimes a “hero.”
The “Life lesson” that the author hopes you will learn by reading the story. This can be expressed in a one sentence message (similar to the moral of a story).
A reference to a different work of literature, art, or culture
These characters undergo at least one significant INTERNAL change. Something occurs which causes them to make a shift in the way they see the world, themselves, or others. Their beliefs and behaviors change significantly.
The feel of the literature. Suspenseful, funny, etc.
Categories of literature defined by certain traits
Person vs. Self ( A character is battling against himself to make a decision)
This is a character who is very 1 dimensional & undeveloped to the reader. We know very little about this character (usually only 1 or 2 things).
A situation in which there is a difference between what is expected and the reality.
