Poetry Terminology

Horizontales
A comparison in which the qualities of one thing are figuratively carried over to another thing.
A “paragraph” of a poem:
A figure of speech that compares two distinct things by using a connective word such as "like" or "as."
Exaggerated statements
Two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.
When a word looks the way it sounds
A stop or pause in a line, often marked by punctuation
Verticales
The repetition of sounds in a sequence of words.
A poem of 14 lines - Usually broken into sections of 8 and 6 with a "turn line."
The continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next.
When a 'hissing' sound is made by using the 's' sound repeatedly.
