Horizontales
The largest and most well-stocked store for an apparel manufacturer.
The ability of a product to sell regularly at full price (often calculated as a percentage).
The point at which the same pattern duplicates itself or repeats on a fabric.
These are garments created as one-off pieces for a specific client.
Acronym used in inventory management; a distinct item for sale that represents the attributes of a product, including the size, style, color, etc.
Acronym for a centralized source of information used to manufacture a product. It is a list of the items needed to create a product as well as the instructions on how to assemble that product. Manufacturers that build products start the assembly process by creating this term.
Abbreviation for documentation that is vital to both sample and garment production process. They contain fully detailed fashion flats and specs, topstitching and hardware details, any necessary artwork layouts, fabric and trim information, and all other necessary information to produce a sample garment–and eventually bulk production.
Leather that has the top layer removed. It has a nap that is generally soft and pliable.
Verticales
Acronym: a widely used measure for corporate profitability. By stripping out the non-cash depreciation and amortization expense as well as taxes and debt costs dependent on the capital structure, this term attempts to represent cash profit generated by the company’s operations.
A retail model of delivering fashion design trends both quickly and cheaply to a mass audience.
A method of knitting with a number of colors, in which a separate length or ball of yarn is used for each area of color (as opposed to different yarns being carried at the back of the work).
The stiffness of the leather.
A black and white fashion technical drawing that shows a garment as if it were laid flat to display all seams, topstitching, hardware, and any other design details.
An aniline tanned leather that is stiff, durable and has a matte finish. It is best left untreated in order to naturally patina. Aniline leather means there is no finish to the top layer of the skin, so you will see more of the natural markings of the leather.
Acronym: amount of money a buyer can spend on merchandise to be delivered within a given period, minus the amount allocated to merchandise on order.
A temporary shop that is set up for a definitive period of time, oftentimes in a typical selling space, such as an empty retail shop, mall kiosk, or art museum.
