Fiction Terms

Horizontales
Objects, characters, events, and settings that can represent something else beyond themselves.
Irony when a character says something, but the audience/reader knows more than the character does about other characters or events.
When one or more ideas, events or character arcs in a single story have strikingly similar properties, often with the effect of highlighting or revealing more about the other.
Irony when an event occurs that is the opposite of what was expected by the character and/or reader.
A device that is not a natural extension of the plot that allows for an easy–and unbelievable—resolution of conflict.
To give a suggestion of something that will happen in the story by using symbols, allegories, or other literary techniques.

Verticales
An unexpected development in the plot. In some cases, the reader is intentionally misled during the rising actions to add to the effect.

A style of writing that has the goal of mocking or scorning an individual, an institution, or society.
A character in a piece of literature who has very exaggerated characteristics, usually for comic effect.
When a relevant future event is brought up in the current time of the story.
Parallel events of an outside story or event, such as well-known fables or political events.
When a relevant past event is brought up in the current time of the story.
This often refers to the history, culture, or beliefs of the world. It is common in fantasy and sci-fi genres.
