Treatment of Malaria

Horizontales
A structural analog of another antimalarial drug. It also has some therapeutic efficacy for treating rheumatoid arthritis, but not COVID-19 (based on EBM).
An antimalarial also found in tonic water. At higher doses it can cause a constellation of side effects including tinnitus, headache, nausea, dizziness and visual disturbances. Contraindicated in anyone with a long QTc.
Verticales
One of two subtypes of Plasmodium that have a liver stage that can be challenging to eliminate by using most antimalarial drugs
One of the oldest antimalarial drugs. Overuse has resulted in widespread Plasmodium resistance. It produces its antiparasitic effect by getting concentrated in the acidic environment of parasite food vacuoles, where, due to its properties as a chemical base, makes the internal food vacuole pH less acidic. This causes the accumulation of toxic breakdown products of hemoglobin within the food vacuole, which normally become detoxified by a mechanism requiring an acidic pH. The build up of toxic Hb metabolites kills the parasite.
A group of natural products isolated from a Chinese shrub. They are WHO drugs of choice for treating choloroquine-resistant P. falciparum
Effective against P. vivax and P. ovale, and should never be given without first testing the patient for G6PD deficiency.
