Horizontales
A type of drama in which a hero is destroyed due to some flaw in his character.
A brave warrior and Thane of Glamis at the start of the play. When the king hears of his courage, he awards him the title Thane of Cawdor. The witches use this to tempt him to want to kill Duncan.

A nation in the northern part of the island of Great Britain, and the setting of the play.
An area of Scotland, of which Macbeth is already Thane at the start of the play.
The male ruler of a kingdom. At the start of the play, it is Duncan. The three witches predict that Macbeth will be one someday, and so will Banquo's children.
An eager and often excessive desire for wealth, power, and status.
An area of Scotland once ruled by a traitor who was sentenced to death by Duncan. Duncan awards the traitor's former title to Macbeth before Macbeth is aware of it. The witches use this knowledge to make Macbeth think they have the power of prophecy.

The Thane of Fife. He arrives at Macbeth's castle to pick up Duncan. He is treated rudely by a drunken porter, and discovers Duncan's dead body. He decides to return to his home in Fife.

Verticales
Macbeth is disturbed to see his own hands covered in it.
